曲中、that Sepetember in the rain というフレーズが3度も韻を踏みます。誰かて3回も同じことを言われたら多少は気になります。 ちなみに、2回目と3回目の that September in the rain の that の前には、1回目に登場した “Remenber” が省略されているものと思われます。というのは、そのフレーズと共に過去を思い出しているので。
この曲はミュージカル「パル・ジョーイ」(1940年)の主題歌。作曲はリチャード・ロジャース、作詞はロレンツ・ハート。”恋人の素晴らしさを本にでも書けたらなぁ”という内容のラブソング。 ところで、ここで言っている「I could write a book」を字面通り「私は本を書くことができた」と単純に解釈してはいけません。
実際の意味としては「I could write a book if I had that skill」という感じで、これは「十分な技能があれば本を書けるのに」というニュアンス。なので、この歌詞からすると本人は自分に本を書く能力が無いことを認めてしまっているので、ある意味残念に見えます。 ただ、ここで本人が主張したいことは、本にでも書きたいくらい恋人が魅力的であるということのはず。そうすると、客観的にはその時点で大分のろけているようで、これもまた残念に見えます。 とはいえ、そんな歌詞も含めて、この曲は素晴らしいと評価されているからこそ、ジャズスタンダードの一曲に挙げられるのでしょう。
